The promise of generative AI often collides with the reality of enterprise unit economics. When organizations attempt to scale internal agents across departments, high token consumption and inaccurate outputs frequently stall deployments.

To determine how pre-processing and business logic impact AI cost and performance, Alteryx and its partner NextWave independently conducted benchmark token consumption studies.

The results demonstrate that applying deterministic business rules, reusable workflows, and intelligent model selection can:

  • Reduce token costs by up to 95%
  • Speed up LLM execution by up to 85%
  • Lift output accuracy to 100%

In these benchmark tests, Alteryx handled the data preparation, deterministic business logic, and aggregation, while the LLM handled interpretation, synthesis, and final output.

Benchmark 1: NextWave Office of the CFO trade reconciliation

In an independent study conducted by NextWave, benchmark tests evaluated an Office of the CFO reconciliation between front-office and back-office transaction data. Few operational workflows carry higher stakes than trade reconciliation, where finance teams must pinpoint data breaks across conflicting front-office booking records and back-office settlement feeds under strict market deadlines. In this environment, missing even a single discrepancy can trigger immediate regulatory penalties, capital misallocations, or catastrophic audit exposure.

The test compared two methods:

  1. LLM Alone (Non-Deterministic): Raw trade feeds were passed directly to a standalone LLM to identify data breaks and calculate discrepancies.
  2. LLM + MCP (Deterministic Hybrid): An Alteryx workflow executed the data matching, filtering, and deterministic reconciliation logic, sending only pre-processed summary breaks to the LLM.

NextWave achieved a 20x reduction (95.06%) in LLM token consumption using the Alteryx workflow while catching 100% of the errors. In a live reconciliation of 120 trades, the LLM-alone approach missed two critical breaks. For financial controls and operational reporting, the difference between 81.8% and 100% accuracy is the difference between a trusted system and a business liability.

Benchmark 2: cross-industry testing on 50+ enterprise use cases

To validate these findings across broader operational environments, Alteryx AI specialists conducted 480 test trials analyzing workflow optimization techniques across more than 50 enterprise use cases and more than 12 industries.

The benchmark evaluated standalone LLMs generating disposable code from scratch against automated runs that combined an LLM with an existing, governed Alteryx workflow.

The apex margin leak challenge

Consider a high-friction finance and operations challenge: the Apex Margin Leak task. A finance team notices profitability dropping, but the leakage is buried across messy, multi-system source files spanning disparate product categories, sales channels, geographic regions, and supplier contracts.

When organizations ask an unguided LLM to solve this, the model has to write disposable Python scripts on the fly, repeatedly querying massive, uncleaned datasets. The team sits waiting for nearly four minutes as the model reasons through sprawling tables, churns through over 1.1 million tokens…and still fails to deliver dependable accuracy.

In contrast, when an established Alteryx workflow executes the underlying joins, calculations, and aggregations first, the LLM receives only clean, structured margin summaries. Instead of writing code from scratch and guessing at business rules, the model simply synthesizes pre-validated insights—cutting execution time from 220 seconds to just 34 seconds, using a fraction of the tokens, and achieving 100% accuracy.

Key findings from 480 benchmark trials:

  • Up to 93% Token Reduction: Combining an LLM with a trusted Alteryx workflow reduced token consumption by up to 93% on tasks involving raw, ungrounded data.
  • Up to 85% Faster Processing: Across benchmark trials, reusing an established Alteryx workflow answered queries up to 85% faster than having an LLM generate disposable scripts from scratch. In the Apex Margin Leak scenario, run times dropped from 220 seconds to 34 seconds (an 84% speed improvement).
  • Higher Accuracy: Workflows achieved 97.5% accuracy compared to just 70% for an LLM alone, ensuring auditability and eliminating hallucinations on core calculations.

The three pillars of token optimization

Both benchmarks demonstrate that achieving up to 90%+ cost optimization relies on three foundational workflow practices:

  1. Reduce AI Input: Lower token consumption before data ever reaches a model through pre-filtering, aggregation, and document chunking.
  2. Invoke AI Selectively: Enforce business rules deterministically in the data pipeline. Use intelligent routing so that simple lookups never hit expensive reasoning models.
  3. Improve AI Efficiency: Implement caching and reuse established workflows to eliminate redundant API calls, pairing reuse with prompt optimization.

Making AI ROI provable, not assumed

The future is not about forcing AI into every manual step; it is about ensuring AI is visible, understandable, repeatable, and auditable—with a clear, cost-effective reason to be there.

By allowing Alteryx to govern business logic and data preparation before engaging an LLM, organizations replace runaway token bills with predictable performance and audit-grade accuracy.
