How Alteryx is Working with Governments to Foster Ethical and Transparent AI

What's New   |   Chris Lal   |   Jul 14, 2023

Generative AI holds boundless possibilities for improving the way we live, work, and interact. However, it also poses risks to both individuals and society. As leaders in developing and deploying AI technology, we recognize our responsibility to create, maintain, and foster ethical and transparent AI. We aim to implement appropriate safeguards to mitigate safety, security, privacy, and human rights risks.

As part of this effort, Alteryx is supporting governments worldwide to understand AI and create sensible AI policy frameworks. In recent submissions to the United States National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and to Australia’s Department of Industry, Science, and Resources, Alteryx has called for AI regulation to establish ground rules and a level playing field across a fragmented and growing AI landscape. The goals are to mitigate the risk of harmful outcomes and encourage global standardization and interoperability.

Regulating AI without impeding progress

While concerns persist that regulation may stifle innovation, we firmly believe that governments can regulate AI without impeding its progress. The key lies in enacting legislation that adheres to the following principles:

  • Comprehensive: Regulations should cover the entire life cycle of an AI system, spanning planning, development, data acquisition, training data, model definition, validation, testing, deployment, and use.
  • Interoperable: Regulations should preempt divergent state laws and align with global regulations and standards, fostering harmonization and consistency.
  • Risk-Based: Regulation should include risk impact assessments to identify, document, and mitigate concerns, especially in high-risk systems.
  • Outcome-Focused and Flexible: Regulation should prioritize desired outcomes while avoiding rigid design-based specifications, allowing for adaptability and innovation.

Alteryx is committed to working with governments in developing a responsible AI framework that safeguards against risks without hindering innovation. Our ongoing efforts aim to enhance our AI capabilities and provide a powerful combination of intuitive, user-friendly AI-supported analytics in a secure, governed, and enterprise-ready software platform.

Establishing a responsible AI regulatory framework is crucial to mitigating significant risks while harnessing the vast potential of AI. We owe it to our stakeholders to uphold the highest standards of accountability and ensure that our technology serves the best interests of all. Alteryx remains dedicated to driving forward responsible AI innovation while fostering a secure and thriving environment. Together, we can shape a future in which AI flourishes responsibly, delivering transformative benefits to society.
