Company Background:
Crowe LLP is a public accounting and consulting firm that uses its deep industry expertise to provide audit, tax, advisory, and consulting services to public and private entities. Crowe is recognized by many organizations as one of the best places to work in the U.S. As an independent member of Crowe Global, one of the largest global accounting networks in the world, Crowe serves clients worldwide. The network consists of more than 200 independent accounting and advisory services firms in more than 130 countries. Their Tax practice, with over 1,000 professionals, plays a critical role in delivering both client-facing services and internal innovation, constantly pushing for better, faster, and more scalable ways to handle complex tax workflows.
In a field where precision meets pressure, the tax professionals at Crowe LLP are no strangers to complexity. Keeping pace with evolving regulations and rising client expectations demanded new ways of thinking about data, scale, and how work gets done. With a dedicated tax transformation team and a future-focused mindset, Crowe has made data analytics and automation core to its strategy.
Crowe’s tax professionals were spending hours on tasks that felt more like data wrangling than tax advisory. The teams were using manual workflows to pull data from disparate systems, clean in Excel, and reconcile errors by hand. The tools weren’t broken — they were just built for a smaller, slower world.
A handful of tax professionals at Crowe were using Alteryx to automate and accelerate manual work, but most were working in siloes and widespread adoption had stalled.
We had some groups using Excel and others using totally different tools. There was no consistency or ability to scale.
Hannah Brauer
Tax Transformation Manager at Crowe
That changed with the launch of the Alteryx Innovation Program (AIP) — a bold, scalable initiative to bring automation and analytics to the entire tax practice.
Crowe built a learning ecosystem with over 190 professionals participating in AIP. Learners were organized into peer cohorts and paired with experienced Alteryx users to guide them through hands-on projects and real tax use cases.
Each cohort had use cases to solve and a teammate to call when they got stuck. That made all the difference.
Aaron Foster
Tax Transformation Managing Director at Crowe
The tax transformation team also held “in-office days” that made adoption more approachable for those without a tech background.
“We started by asking, ‘What’s wasting your time? What are things you’re repeating every day?’ Then we built tools to fix that together,” said Hannah Brauer, Tax Transformation Manager at Crowe. “The low-code, icon-based interface made it possible to onboard tax accountants who’ve never written a line of code.”
The impact was immediate and transformative. Time spent on busy work was minimized. Data quality improved through embedded validation checks. Reviewers can now see exactly how each number was derived — building confidence across even the most Excel-loyal veterans.
It’s not just about upskilling; it’s helping people build a foundation to think differently about data.
Tracey Grant-Castleman
Tax Transformation Leader at Crowe
Perhaps more meaningful, Alteryx changed the career path for junior tax staff. By automating busy work, Crowe gave new hires access to higher-level projects earlier and the confidence to solve complex problems. “They’re now able to learn new tasks they wouldn’t have had the opportunity to learn until later in their career,” said Aaron Foster, Tax Transformation Managing Director at Crowe.
With Alteryx firmly embedded in daily workflows, Crowe’s next move is integrating AI to elevate decision-making and scale innovation.
Teams are already piloting use cases across document review, client advisory, and internal operations. “We’re using Alteryx’s embedded AI features to rethink how workflows are orchestrated and delivered — internally and for our clients,” said Tracey Grant-Castleman, Tax Transformation Leader at Crowe.
The focus is on scale: equipping every tax professional, not just the technologists, with tools to make smarter decisions faster. As more delivery units adopt Alteryx, Crowe is building momentum toward a truly AI-enabled tax function — where insight and efficiency go hand in hand.
Automated workflows eliminated repetitive tasks, freeing up time for review, analysis, and client impact.
Low-code tools and hands-on programs helped junior staff build real-world skills faster, accelerating career growth and confidence.
Companywide standards for workflow design, governance, and documentation ensured repeatable, auditable processes across the entire tax function.
