This course is intended to provide students with practical literacy on robotic process automation through real-world, relevant data preparation use cases. It will help identify potential uses and the benefits and considerations for robotic process automation. The students will learn the elements of a business process and the basics of developing a BPM application, implementing triggers to automate processes, defining and measuring KPIs. Students will use elements of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning capabilities to handle high-volume, repeatable tasks that previously required humans to perform. These tasks can include queries, calculations, and maintenance of records and transactions. Students will be able to apply analytics to the generated data for a systematic computational analysis of data for the discovery, interpretation, and communication of meaningful patterns in data that will be used towards effective decision-making

Alteryx is used to demonstrate how disjointed systems can be tied together to a myriad of data sources. I use Alteryx to tidy up the process before I use a bot to automate the process flows.

This course focuses on business intelligence to support various management tasks in the industry. Students learn to create business intelligence solutions, utilizing data mining methods, and applying intelligence techniques for industrial decision support. Students will be involved in projects to learn the state-of-the-art techniques for business advantages.

MISY675 – A dashboard design and storytelling course. Students learn how to transform data and prepare data-driven stories. In my course, we extensively cover the Alteryx Core Certification curriculum and students take the Core Certification as part of their grade. We achieve over a 90% success rate.

I teach a required data analytics course in our Master of Accounting Science degree program called Data Analytics and Decision-Making in Accounting. This course examines the role accounting professionals play in judgment and decision making in organizations. Students draw upon both economic and behavioral theories to develop critical thinking and decision-making skills. The course examines the use of data and data analytics in accounting decision making and the development of statistical models to predict and evaluate accounting information. The course challenges students to operate effectively with ambiguity and communicate complex accounting concepts to non-accounting managers.

We use Alteryx extensively in the class to clean and prepare data for analysis.  The students work on cases during the semester and complete a large group project using data from the City of Chicago data portal.  The data is large and sloppy.  Students use their Alteryx skills learned during the semester to extract, transform, and then analyze the data.  Students are also required to take all four Alteryx Designer core micro credentials during the semester.

Acct 404 – Emerging Technologies in Accounting:  This course provides students with hands on experience using technologies including Python, UiPath, Alteryx, Tableau, PowerQuery and PowerBI.  The course covers the practical application of these technologies across many business sectors.

I teach three courses designed to help students integrate technology into accounting problem solving.

1. ACCT 3553 – Accounting Information Systems (Undergraduate)
   This course provides all undergraduate accounting students with a high-level overview of ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes and data analytics. As part of the curriculum, I introduce Alteryx to showcase the breadth and capabilities of modern data tools. Even with only two Alteryx-based assignments, the impact has been significant—one student, during an internship at a major banking institution, used Alteryx to develop a data processing solution that resulted in substantial time savings for the organization.
2. ACCT 5970 – Accounting Data Analytics (Graduate)
   At the master’s level, this course explores data analytics across the different accounting disciplines (Tax, Audit, Financial Accounting, and Managerial Accounting) utilizing Excel, Power Query, Power BI, Tableau, and Alteryx. We spend approximately 3–4 weeks in Alteryx. Over the past two years, more than 100 students have completed the course, with only four not passing the Alteryx Designer Core Certification.
3. ACCT 5703 – IT Audit and Controls (Graduate)
   I began teaching this course in the Spring of 2024 and integrated Alteryx through an EY-developed case study. Because many of the students have already earned their Core Certification, I don’t teach the tool. Students use Alteryx to conduct substantive testing on a payroll file we generated using AI.

Accounting information systems and the use of information technology for decision-making, including controlling risks within business processes. Emphasis on sources and types of information and the use of analytical tools in solving accounting management problems.

ACTG 461 – Accounting Analytics
An introduction to how to leverage SQL and statistical analysis to address problems/applications in financial and managerial accounting, auditing, taxation, and accounting information systems. The primary tool used is Alteryx.

This course provides a hands-on introduction to data science through the powerful, user-friendly Alteryx platform. Students will learn core data science concepts such as data preparation, blending, cleansing, and basic analytics, all without the need for coding. Emphasis is placed on building practical workflows, using Alteryx tools to solve real-world problems, and interpreting data-driven insights. Ideal for beginners, the course equips students with foundational skills to explore, analyze, and visualize data effectively.

ITS120/L – Application Development and Emerging Technologies

Development of end-to-end automated workflow and emerging technologies focusing on Alteryx with emphasis on requirements management, ETL, usability, testing, deployment, including ethical and legal considerations.  This course comes with laboratory sessions to complement and reinforce the concepts discussed.

ACG 6419 – Data Wrangling and Visualization for Accounting Professionals

This course covers importing, cleaning, and transforming data from multiple sources and formats to facilitate data analytics.  Working with transformed and cleaned data, students learn to construct effective data visualizations using various tools.

Course Objectives

The purpose of this course is to prepare accounting graduate students with the skills to respond to the growing complexity of business data. Accounting professionals can blaze the path through the changing data landscape. Our growing expertise in accounting data analytics will add new value to our clients and firms in ways never before seen. We will think broadly about dissecting a complex business problem, using analytical tools to understand the problem, to explore the data, to consider our approach, and implement the right tools to understand the client’s risk and opportunities. We will talk about how to provide the client an actionable approach and communicate the importance of the issue to our client.

My work involves creating and designing modules that empower business students across industries to unlock insights through analytics, storytelling and AI fluency. Leveraging platforms like Alteryx Auto Insights and Designer Cloud, I guide learners in building intuitive workflows and enhancing decision-making with AI-driven insights and low-code/no-code solutions.

I also introduce students to automated machine learning, helping them grasp the fundamentals of model training and the role of AI in business. By emphasizing workflow analysis and streamlined data processing, we continuously refine a scalable curriculum that keeps pace with industry trends and equips students with essential AI skills they can carry confidently into any business domain.

Applied Analytics – BIA2001

This subject aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of advanced analytical techniques and their practical applications across various fields.

Students will be grounded in the data analytics life cycle and will learn techniques to ingest, process, and analyse data using predictive analytics.

This will enable them to translate complex data into actionable insights. Additionally, students will enhance their critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills, ensuring accurate data interpretation, and effective presentation of insights for decision.

This course presents the theory and concepts regarding specialized topics in financial accounting. Students learn about business combinations, with emphasis on consolidated financial statements and elimination of inter-company transactions. Final Year Project

This course aims to introduce students to research methods and essential project skills in social data science—an interdisciplinary field that integrates computer science, mathematics and statistics, and the social sciences to address real-world social issues. The Data Analytics Life Cycle forms the core framework of the course. Students are introduced to Alteryx Designer to perform data preprocessing and model building. They are also encouraged to apply advanced techniques, such as text mining and computer vision, in their projects.

ACCT 360 – Advanced Accounting Analytics

This course is designed to equip students with the analytical mindset and practical skills necessary to navigate data-rich business environments. Students learn to use Alteryx to clean, prepare, and analyse both financial and non-financial data. The curriculum emphasises real-world application by integrating accounting knowledge in the four domains namely financial accounting, management accounting, auditing and taxation with descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive analytics to solve business problems, inform decisions, and communicate insights. Courseworks include practical in-lab tasks and a capstone project replicating the analytical process used by the industry.

ACCT 805 – Business Analytics for Decision Making

ACCT 805 is a required course in our Masters of Accountancy program, also offered as an elective for senior undergraduate students majoring in accounting.

This course introduces strategies and methods for developing meaningful business intelligence to assist managers in making decisions in complex decision environments. Using a variety of tools, this hands-on course develops student’s analytic mindset for effective-decision making, requiring that they extract, analyze, and interpret financial information.
